Cornish Guardian article

Nick was interviewed recently by Joan Spratt from The Cornish Guardian, whom we met whilst at a Public Meeting about the Canal Regeneration Project in Bude… Anglers can no longer park and fish from outside the Waterfront Tackle shop, or the Brasserie, the disabled parking bays have been used by the builders for materials and they’ve put cobblestones down because they look good!
Walking on cobblestones is uncomfortable enough (uneven surface?!), but trying to roll a wheelchair over them is no fun at all, as one of the officials found out when he sat in Nick’s wheelchair and tried it for himself! Things have improved slightly, but to get a picture of what’s going on, you can read Nick’s interview HERE and there’s more detailed information on the Project on the North Cornwall Council website. I couldn’t find out what I wanted to with refernce to the Public Meetings, etc., so I may give them a ring later to get you a better link.
Don’t get me wrong, in principle pedestrianising that area is a good idea, but many elderly and infirm people loved to sit in their cars and take in their surroundings; many elderly and/or infirm people have been visiting the Brasserie and enjoying lunch there once a week or once a month for 20+ years… if they can’t be dropped off or park very close by, they can’t go any more - which for one 99 year old lady, would be awful!
So, a lot of issues were raised at the initial meeting and addressed, compromises reached where possible and we attended a further meeting last week. At least they listened and tried, within their remit, to make practical compromises… It’s never going to please everyone, but then what does? Enough said by me! ![]()
